Buffalo rubbing habits

After posting the blog about “Buffalo Misconceptions,” I remembered a great quote about their habit of rubbing on telegraph poles. It’s taken from Frank Roe’s The North American Buffalo and is in a note on page 439:

“A tale is told, which is really too good to be omitted in relation to buffalo rubbing habits. The first telegraph lines suffered much from poles being rubbed down. A high ‘Eastern’ official, who had never seen a buffalo, suggested driving spikes into the poles – ‘That’ll keep ‘em off!’ This was done over a section, and a report requested concerning the results. ‘Fine! They were willing to wait their turn before; now they fight like hell over who’s to get to the poles first!’”
